Windmill Day (Molendag) in Voorne-Putten 2012

I was anticipating for this day for weeks. All the windmills on the island would be open and accessible by various 20 mile bike routes.  I was slightly relieved to NOT have a bike yet. Driving was much more comfortable. It was really fun to climb around inside and hear about the mechanisms that make them run.  I never realized just how loud these things are.  Most of the mills look like the the first picture in Spijkenisse.  The one in Brielle, the second picture, is an older more unusual mill that sort of looks like it's about to take off.  When you're standing inside everything vibrates and it feels like you're in an earthquake.  The mills in the fields are short to the point where you think the blades are going to actually hit the ground, while others are tall if they are in a crowded city.  The taller ones have bigger bases and two of the mills we saw had restaurants in them. I used to want to live in one.  They're so quintessentially Dutch and so picturesque.  After this weekend though, I realized they're not spacious enough to be a home and they're too loud but they're still great to look at.
